Here's some great ideas for a long weekend in queenstown

Looking for that special short break? Somewhere to relax, or perhaps somewhere to unwind? A long weekend in Queenstown could be just what you need.

Nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, Queenstown presents an irresistible blend of thrilling adventures and tranquil escapes. Known worldwide as the "Adventure Capital of the World," Queenstown is a destination that promises more than just adrenaline-fueled activities; it offers a peaceful retreat where the soul can find serenity amidst nature’s beauty. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or in pursuit of relaxation, a weekend in Queenstown is an enriching escape beyond compare.

As we like to say, "Adventure awaits, serenity beckons".

A seamless arrival

Your weekend in Queenstown is remarkably accessible, thanks to its well-connected airport, a mere stone’s throw from the bustling town center. Direct flights from major New Zealand cities and select international locations make it a convenient entry point to this alpine paradise. As you descend into Queenstown, the aircraft windows frame breathtaking vistas of snow-capped peaks and the shimmering expanse of Lake Wakatipu, immediately setting the tone for the adventures ahead.

A wide range of accommodation for your weekend in Queenstown

In Queenstown, your accommodation options are diverse. The town center is vibrant and full of life, perfect if you want to be in the heart of everything. From boutique hotels to budget-friendly hostels, staying downtown means you'll be within walking distance of the town’s many eateries, shops, and nightlife. And if you have one, it means that you can just leave the rental car at your accommodation.

If you are looking for a more tranquil retreat, Fernhill is an excellent choice. Situated just a short drive from the heart of Queenstown, this area is known for luxury lodges and upscale hotels, many affording panoramic views over the lake and the alpine landscape. It’s an ideal base for those who prefer a quieter ambiance with close proximity to the town's attractions. Just be aware that free parking in the town centre is almost impossible to find, so you will probably need to pay for your parking. An option is the excellent local Orbus service.

Convenience reigns supreme along Frankton Road, where a series of hotels, motels and apartments line the lake, offering picturesque views and easy access to both the town and the airport. It’s the perfect choice for families and those looking for a balanced Queenstown experience.

If proximity to air travel is essential, the area near the airport offers a range of accommodations ideal for early departures or arrivals. While it’s a bit further from the town center’s spirited vibe, it’s strategically located to provide hassle-free access to nearby attractions and is especially convenient for those squeezing every moment out of their visit.

Handy tips

1. Queenstown's popularity can result in many places being booked out well in advance. The key to finding the right accommodation is booking early, sometimes months in advance. Be sure to book a flexible rate just in case you need to change your plans.

2. We always choose somewhere with a view. One of the great delights here is just sitting on your balcony and taking in the view. Pepper's Beacon is our favourite.

Day 1 in Queenstown, An adventurer’s playground

Begin your long weekend in Queenstown with a journey into the exhilarating world of adventure that Queenstown is renowned for.

Surrounded by towering peaks and wild rivers, your options are limitless. Experience the thrill of bungee jumping from the historic Kawarau Bridge (we have and we loved it), where adrenaline and awe mix as you take the 43 metre leap into a stunning gorge. Alternatively, try jet boating through the narrow canyons of the Shotover River, where the spray of crystal-clear waters invigorates the senses. The Kawarau Jet is a wonderful alternative, or for a wilderness adventure, the Dart River jet is something you will never forget.

For a different kind of elevation thrill, tandem skydiving offers an unparalleled view of Queenstown's picturesque megascape, gliding silently above the mountains and lakes.

As your day winds down, savor a meal at one of Queenstown’s many restaurants, perhaps enjoying a succulent serving of New Zealand lamb or fresh-caught fish paired with local wine. For something special, combine a cruise on Lake Wakatipu with a delicious buffet dinner at Walter Peak.

Day 2 in Queenstown, a serene escape

Day 2 is your chance to unwind and explore Queenstown’s calmer side. Start your day with a trip up the Skyline Gondola to Bob’s Peak, where sweeping views of the surrounding peaks and the azure lake beneath offer a tranquil respite from the hustle and bustle below. For a more laid-back adventure, consider a gentle hike or a scenic mountain biking tour along well-manicured trails, perfectly capturing the quiet beauty of the region.

In the autumn months, Queenstown transforms into a painter’s palette, with vibrant hues of red, yellow, and orange rippling through the foliage (nearby Arrowtown is simply stunning). This is the ideal time to try a vineyard tour in the nearby Gibbston Valley, renowned for its world-class Pinot Noir. As you explore boutique wineries, time slows down, allowing you to savor excellent wine in the serene surroundings of the vineyards.

One of our Queenstown favourites is the unique Perky's Floating Bar. Moored at the wharf in the town centre, Perky's is a wonderful place for an afternoon or evening drink. They don't offer food, but they encourage you to bring your own food onboard. So buy some takeaway of your choice, buy a beer or wine from Perky's, and sit back and enjoy the views. The legendary Fergburger is a must while you are here, and what better spot to enjoy a burger and a drink than Perky's.

Queenstown is also a golfer's paradise with several world class courses like Jack's Point, located within 30 minutes of town. Our dedicated golf page has lots more information.

A special mention about Fiordland

To really maximise your weekend, have you considered a day trip to either Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound?

Fiordland National Park is a stunning World Heritage listed wilderness wonder, and if you can't experience it on this trip, please, come back and see it.

From Queenstown, it's only around 80 kilometres in a direct line to Milford Sound. But, the Southern Alps are in the way, meaning that it takes 4 to 5 hours drive each way to get there. Add to this 2 or 3 hours for your cruise, and you have a 12 or 13 hour day.

Please, don't try driving yourself. There are lots of excellent organised coach tours which include your cruise, and we always choose one of those. Yes, it's a big day, but you can rest on the trip back, and it's a tour you will remember for ever.

Seasonal splendor throughout the year

Queenstown is a year-round destination, each season offering its own unique charm. Winter transforms the town into a snowy wonderland, attracting skiers and snowboarders to the slopes of The Remarkables and Coronet Peak. Springtime ushers in blooming gardens and rebirth in the landscape, while summer invites you to try water sports and expansive hikes under clear blue skies.

For that ultimate  act of sheer relaxation, a visit to the Onsen Hot Pools is a must. These cedar-lined hot tubs are perched high above the Shotover River, offering a private sanctuary where your mind can wander while absorbing those spectacular mountain and river views. This experience showcases Queenstown’s quieter side, inviting you to pause and savor the moment.

Day 3 A conclusion to remember

Round off your Queenstown long weekend with a laid-back day 3, starting with a leisurely breakfast at one of Queenstown’s inviting cafes. Treat yourself to artisan-style pastries and aromatic coffees, immersing yourself in the town’s buzzing yet relaxed morning energy. The area along the Steamer Wharf is packed with options.

Before you depart, consider a scenic drive out to Glenorchy, just 45 minutes from Queenstown. It’s a place of stunning tranquillity, where lakeside views and epic landscapes provide one last breathtaking glimpse of the region's natural magic.

Arrowtown, around 20 minutes drive from the town centre, and Wanaka (around 1 hours drive) are other wonderful options if you feel like a drive. Wherever you go, the views will blow you away.

So whether you’ve plunged into adventure, or basked in the serenity of nature, Queenstown leaves an indelible mark. This is a place where the thrills of action-packed days can combine seamlessly with moments of peace, beckoning you to return one day to discover yet another layer of its enchanting beauty.
