Driving In New Zealand

A New Zealand self-drive tour is a relaxing, value for money way to see the best of this stunning country. Scenic vistas, and relatively low traffic levels make driving in New Zealand a stress free and enjoyable experience.

Although driving distances viewed on a map may seem short, New Zealand's well maintained roads are often winding or hilly, meaning that travel times are sometimes longer than expected.

So, allow plenty of time for your journey. Take regular breaks, and give yourself time to stop off at the many vantage points.

Driver's Licence

You are able to legally drive in New Zealand for up to 12 months with either a current driver's licence from your home country, or with an International Driving Permit (IDP).

You must carry your licence or permit at all times when driving, and your licence will only enable you to drive the same types of vehicles you are licensed to drive in your home country.

You must be at least 21 years of age to rent a car in New Zealand. Some rental companies may add a "young driver" charge for drivers under 25, and may restrict you from driving certain types of vehicles.

Please ensure that your driver's licence is current, as expired licences will not be accepted by the car rental companies.

And if your licence is not written in English, you must bring an English translation with you, or obtain an International Driving Permit before you come to New Zealand.

Cheap Car Rental New Zealand - Handy Tip

Insurance excess for your rental vehicle can be substantial, and often $3,000 to $4,000. This means that you have to pay this amount in the event of any damage to the vehicle. Rental companies will allow you to reduce this excess if you pay an additional daily charge, which may be $20-$30 extra per day. As an alternative to paying this additional daily fee, check the terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy. You may find that your travel insurance covers the excess. If in doubt ask your travel insurer.

Car Hire FAQs - current at time of publication but subject to change. Please check the DriveNow FAQs for current information here.

What's the max maximum age to hire a car here?

If you are over 75 it's wise to have a current letter from your doctor and car insurer to confirm that you have not had any at fault claims in the last 5 years. But please be aware thathire is at the discretion of each branch, so checking their policy beforehand is recommended.

Is there a minimum age to hire a car in New Zealand?

Yes,  21 years of age. But this can vary from company to company, and some add an additional hire charge if you are under 25. All drivers must have held a full licence for at least 1 year.

Does DriveNow charge a booking fee?

No.

How does DriveNow get their prices?

Directly from each supplier and there are no added charges. Prices displayed are for the basic rental of a vehicle, including standard excess insurance. Extras like options and age related charges are payable to the rental company on collection of your car.

The rates shown assume that the drivers are over 25.

Prices are sourced from each supplier and can change, however, once your booking is confirmed, the price is fixed for your selected dates.

How far ahead should I book?

Booking at least 4 months in advance is recommended. Certain types of vehicles like mini buses, 4WDs and luxury brands book out well in advance.

Peak periods like New Zealand school holidays, Easter, Christmas and long weekends are very popular and vehicles sell out well in advance in these periods.

Rates can also increase as you get closer to your departure date, so booking well ahead has definite advantages.

Why do i need to enter my flight details when I book?

This keeps the rental company informed of your flights arrival time. If they are aware of delays they are more likely to hold your car if your flight is late. If you don't supply flight details, and your flight is late, the rental company may consider you a "no show" and may not hold your vehicle.

Will I need a credit card when I collect my car, and is there a security bond?

Yes. You will need to pay for your vehicle with a credit card in the drivers name. Cash and debit cards are not accepted. The rental company will also charge your card with a security bond which will vary depending on things like the vehicle type, length of your rental, rental location and other factors. It's important to make sure that you have sufficient credit on your card to cover your bond and other holiday expenses. The bond will be refunded at the conclusion of your hire, assuming no damage to the vehicle.
