Day 1: Arrive in Christchurch and unwind at He Puna Taimoana

After arriving in Christchurch and collecting your rental car or campervan, keep your first day light and easy. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island and an ideal entry point for a self-drive holiday. Depending on your arrival time, you may want to explore the city centre, the Botanic Gardens, or simply rest after your flight. The Riverside Markets and the adjoining Terrace have lots of dining options and there are some nice walks along the shores of the Avon River. A punt ride is the perfect introduction to relaxing, kiwi style, and you can combine it with a tram ride through central Christchurch, and a ride on the gondola (wonderful views).

If you feel like easing into the trip with a soak, head to He Puna Taimoana New Brighton Hot Pools.

He Puna Taimoana New Brighton Hot Pools
Location: 195 Marine Parade New Brighton, Christchurch
Distance from central Christchurch: about 8 miles / 13 kilometres
Driving time: about 20 to 25 minutes

Set right beside the beach, He Puna Taimoana is a stylish hot pools complex with a distinctly coastal feel. Their "Sunrise Soak" on selected mornings is a relaxing way to welcome in the new day.

Features:

  • Five heated pools
  • Beach and ocean views
  • Sauna
  • Steam room
  • Cold plunge pool 7-10° C
  • A calming, modern design
  • Cafe

Booking and age tips:

  • Some sessions are family friendly
  • Some sessions like the Sunrise Soak are quieter and better suited to adults
  • Sunset sessions are especially popular
  • Pre-booking is recommended year-round

Stay overnight in Christchurch. We've stayed recently at the Heritage in Cathedral Square and it's a great spot, right in the CBD. Out near the airport, both the Novotel and Sudima are highly recommended. Both are a short walk to the Spitfire Square shopping centre which has several restaurants and a supermarket. We love the New Zealand Green Lip Mussels at Lonestar.

Day 2: Christchurch to Hanmer Springs

Distance: about 81 miles / 130 kilometres
Driving time: about 1 hour 45 minutes

Today your South Island hot pools itinerary takes you north through rolling hills, farmland, and wineries to Hanmer Springs, one of the most famous thermal destinations in New Zealand.

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa
Location: 42 Amuri Avenue Hanmer Springs, North Canterbury

Hanmer Springs
is a must-visit on any South Island hot pools itinerary thanks to its range of pools, activity options, and mountain village setting. Kids love the adventure park with water slides and extensive play areas, while the range of hot pools means there's something for all tastes.

Features:

  • Natural thermal mineral pools
  • Sulphur pools
  • Rock pools
  • Family pools
  • Waterslides
  • Aqua play areas
  • Massage and spa treatments

Booking and age tips:

  • Excellent for families with children
  • Great for mixed-age groups
  • Adults can enjoy quieter pools and spa treatments
  • Book treatments in advance
  • Visit early or later in the day for a calmer experience

Stay overnight in Hanmer Springs. Our usual choice is Tussock Peak. It's just a five minute walk to the pools and shopping centre. For dining options we can highly recommend Saints Cafe (greenlip mussels) and Monteiths Brewery Bar (the seafood platter).

Day 3: Hanmer Springs to Maruia Hot Springs

Distance: about 25 miles / 80 kilometres
Driving time: about 1.25 hours

Today’s drive takes you through inland alpine scenery toward Lewis Pass and Maruia Hot Springs.

Maruia Hot Springs
Location: 1513 State Highway 7, Lewis Pass

Maruia Hot Springs feels more like a mountain retreat than a standard hot pools complex. Surrounded by forest and mountain views, it is one of the most peaceful thermal stops on your South Island hot pools itinerary. More than 500,000 litres of geothermal water flows through the springs each day, and the pool water is actually cooled to between 37° C to 42° C. There's a selection of spa and wellness experiences available, and this is a place to just relax and rejuvenate.

You can stay onsite, and can choose from well appointed hotel rooms, glamping pods, and camp sites. The nearest township, Reefton, is around 45 minutes drive, so your dining options here are limited. Thankfully, the fully licensed restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and focuses on local produce.

Features:

  • Natural mineral hot pools
  • Outdoor forest and alpine setting
  • Spa treatments
  • Relaxed retreat atmosphere
  • On-site accommodation and dining

Booking and age tips:

  • Best suited to adults, couples, and travellers seeking a wellness feel
  • Less activity-based than Hanmer Springs
  • Check child access rules before booking
  • Staying on site is a great choice if available

Stay overnight at Maruia or nearby.

Maruia Springs
Comfortable room at Maruia Springs

Day 4: Maruia to Franz Josef

Distance: about 124 miles / 200 kilometres
Driving time: about 3 hours 15 minutes

Travel west through mountain scenery and then down the coast toward Franz Josef. This is a beautiful driving day with the option to stop in Greymouth or Hokitika.

Good stops en route include:

  • The West Coast Treetop Walk and Tower Zipline, South of Hokitika
  • Hokitika for lunch. The Beachfront Hotel has a great bistro and outdoor dining overlooking the ocean
  • Hokitika Gorge detour if time allows
  • West Coast beach viewpoints

Stay the next two nights in Franz Josef. There's a good selection of accommodation here with everything from hostels to luxury hotels. We've stayed at Punga Grove several times and it's clean and comfortable and about 5 minutes walk to the main street.

For meals we love the Monsoon bar and The Landing. Both have good pub food.

Day 5: Franz Josef and Waiho Hot Tubs

Waiho Hot Tubs
Location: 64 Cron Street Franz Josef Village/ Waiau
Distance from your accommodation: usually just a short local drive or walk depending on where you stay

Waiho Hot Tubs are a boutique experience and one of the most intimate hot pool stops on this itinerary. The private cedar tubs are tucked into a rainforest setting, making this an especially memorable stop after exploring glacier country.

Features:

  • Private cedar hot tubs
  • Rainforest setting
  • Freshly prepared tubs for each session
  • Quiet, secluded atmosphere
  • Great after a glacier walk or scenic flight
  • You can add Epsom Salts or Hydrosol for a fee

Booking and age tips:

  • Advance booking is essential
  • Best suited to couples and adults, but children aged 5-14 are allowed
  • Family suitability depends on current policies
  • Evening sessions are very popular so pre-book

Other attractions in Franz Josef

The glacier is the main attraction here and there's a wide range of tours including glacier hikes and helicopter landings. You can search using the widget below. We did the snow landing and loved it.

The West Coast Wildlife Centre is worth a visit, and you can see the elusive kiwi on display.

Stay a second night in Franz Josef.

Day 6: Franz Josef to Queenstown

Distance: about 219 miles / 352 kilometres
Driving time: about 5 hours 30 minutes

This is one of the longer drives of the trip, but also one of the most spectacular. The journey takes you through Haast Pass, Wānaka, and Central Otago before arriving in Queenstown.

Because the drive is long, it is best to keep the evening free for a meal and rest.

Stay the next 4 nights in Queenstown.

Important tip: in peak periods like summer (Nov-Jan), the ski season (late June to October) and during New Zealand school holidays, accommodation options dry up in Queenstown. We highly recommend booking your accommodation up to six months in advance for these periods. You can read our Queenstown accommodation tips here. If you want to stay close to the bars and restaurants, centrally located hotels like Peppers Beacon, Crowne Plaza and Novotel Lakeside are perfect. All are only a minute or two flat walk to everything (beware of the hills in Queenstown).

Day 7: Soak above the river at Onsen Hot Pools and Day Spa

Onsen Hot Pools and Day Spa
Location: 160 Arthurs Point Rd, Arthurs Point, Queenstown
Distance from central Queenstown: about 4.5 miles / 7 kilometres
Driving time: about 10 minutes

Onsen is one of the best-known luxury hot pool experiences in New Zealand. Its private cedar-lined hot pools overlook the Shotover River canyon and make an unforgettable Queenstown indulgence.

Features:

  • Private hot pools
  • Canyon and river views
  • Retractable front windows in some rooms
  • Day spa treatments
  • Premium experience ideal for special occasions

Booking and age tips:

  • Primarily geared toward adults and couples
  • Check age restrictions before booking
  • Reserve well in advance
  • Sunset sessions are in especially high demand

Stay overnight in Queenstown.

Day 8: Enjoy a boutique Queenstown wellness day at Aluume

Aluume
Location: 34 Brecon Street central Queenstown
Distance: centrally located near the Queenstown CBD

Aluume adds a more contemporary wellness experience to your Queenstown stay. While different in style from a classic thermal pool complex, it fits beautifully into a hot pools and spa-focused South Island itinerary.

Features:

  • Boutique wellness feel
  • Contemporary spa environment
  • Relaxation-focused experiences
  • A good complement to more scenic hot pool stops

Booking and age tips:

  • Best suited to adults
  • Check current treatment and access options
  • Book in advance for preferred times

This extra Queenstown day gives you space to enjoy the town without feeling hurried. Add a lakefront walk, relaxed brunch, or a gentle sightseeing activity if you like. Be sure to check our Perky's Floating Bar, one of our favourite spots.

Stay overnight in Queenstown.

Aluume Queenstown communal pool

Day 9: Slow down with The Bathhouse in Queenstown

The Bathhouse
Location: 35 Brecon Street central Queenstown
Distance: depends on your accommodation location, but just a few minutes walk from the town centre

The Bathhouse is another excellent addition to a relaxing Queenstown stay. It suits visitors who want to build in a dedicated spa and indulgence day.

Features:

  • Boutique relaxation experience
  • Spa-style atmosphere
  • Easy to combine with a slower day around Queenstown

Booking and age tips:

  • Best suited to adults
  • Not typically aimed at families with young children
  • Reserve ahead for treatments or premium appointments

Having four nights in Queenstown helps this itinerary feel genuinely restorative rather than rushed. It also gives you flexibility if you want to include a scenic outing between wellness experiences.

Stay overnight in Queenstown.

Day 10: Queenstown to Lake Tekapo

Distance: about 158 miles / 255 kilometres
Driving time: about 3 hours

Leave Queenstown and drive north through Central Otago and the Mackenzie Basin to Lake Tekapo. This route is scenic, straightforward, and much shorter than some earlier driving days.

Lake Tekapo is one of the most beautiful places in the South Island, known for its turquoise lake, mountain backdrop, and dark sky reserve.

Stay overnight in Lake Tekapo.

Day 11: Relax at Tekapo Springs

Tekapo Springs
Location: 300 Lakeside Drive Lake Tekapo

Tekapo Springs is one of the most scenic thermal attractions in the South Island, sitting above the lake with wide alpine views. In the cooler months from around May till October, the snow covered Southern Alps form a beautiful backdrop, and add to the serenity of this wonderful spot. Soaking while the snow falls is an experience not to be missed, and we hope that you are lucky enough to experience it. Stargazing from your hot pool is another special experience at Tekapo Springs

Features:

  • Hot pools with lake and mountain views
  • Family-friendly bathing areas
  • Adult only private pools
  • Spa treatments
  • Seasonal ice skating
  • Snow tubing in winter
  • Easy pairing with in-house stargazing experiences

Day 12: Lake Tekapo to Methven and Ōpuke Thermal Pools and Spa

Distance: about 82 miles / 132 kilometres
Driving time: about 1 hour 45 minutes

Today you drive to Methven for another premium hot pools stop.

Ōpuke Thermal Pools and Spa
Location: 35 Mount Hutt Station Rd, Methven, Canterbury

Ōpuke has quickly become one of the top modern thermal experiences in the South Island. With stylish facilities, mountain views, family-friendly spaces, and adults-only areas, it is a very flexible stop for different types of travellers.

We've sampled the family friendly "Discovery" pools and the adults only "Tranquility" pools, and loved both. We have to admit a preference for the swim up bar in "Tranquility". What a relaxing way to spend an hour or two.

Methven is historically more relaxed outside ski season, but Opuke has really provided a reason to come here all year round. Highly recommended.

Features:

  • Tranquility pools
  • Discovery pools
  • Private Serenity tubs
  • Adults-only zones
  • Swim-up bar in some areas
  • Spa treatments
  • Modern premium facilities

Booking and age tips:

  • Excellent for families and adults alike
  • Adults-only areas are ideal for quieter soaking
  • Families should choose the correct zone when booking
  • Reserve in advance, especially for adults-only access and treatments

Stay overnight in Methven.

  • Revisiting He Puna Taimoana for a final seaside soak

Optional revisit: He Puna Taimoana New Brighton Hot Pools
