Where is Peppers Beacon Queenstown?

Location: 34 Lake Esplanade Queenstown

Peppers Beacon Queenstown sits in an absolute prime location, directly across the road from the shores of Lake Wakatipu.

Importantly for Queenstown, the Beacon is a flat, level, 5-10 minute walk to the town centre. No steep hills to negotiate here.

So no need to get the car out of the covered carpark. Leave the car there for those longer trips, and enjoy the lakeside stroll to town.

There's a paved footpath both sides of Lake Esplanade, but we always cross the road and walk along the lakeside. Around 100 metres from Peppers, you can step down onto Steamer Wharf, where there's lots of cafes for breakfast. The historic TSS Earnslaw also docks here.

Peppers Beacon Queenstown is about 8 kilometres from the Queenstown Airport. They don't offer a shuttle.

why we love Peppers Beacon queenstown

Location, views, and features.

We've already spoken about the location, which is fantastic. But the views from the lake view rooms and apartments, well they are just something special. We always choose a lake view apartment, and it doesn't matter whether we are sitting inside by the gas fire, or outside on the deck, those views just draw you in. There's always something happening on Lake Wakatipu. The TSS Earnslaw cruises back and forth throughout the day, jetboats race across the lake, and the we love watching the Hydro Attack as it disappears underwater before blasting back through the surface.

We also love the features of Peppers Beacon. Wonderful selection of room types, undercover parking, and easy access.

We can't wait till out next stay.

Any cons?

Some reviews mention that some rooms are getting a little tired, but we've always found them to be clean and well maintained.

The lake view rooms have a beautiful outlook. The courtyard rooms look out onto a well maintained garden and walkway, but with no lake view. So be sure of your room selection if views are important.

Check in access can be a little challenging if you have a car. Finding a place to park on Lake Esplanade while you check in can be a problem. We usually drive underneath into the front car park then dash upstairs and check in. The main car park is accessed from the street behind Peppers Beacon (Brunswick Street).

If you have a car, and don't want to pay for parking at Peppers Beacon, be aware that free parking near Peppers is very difficult to find. There are several paid parking options like Wilson and the Man Street car park.

Peppers Beacon Queenstown Room Types

The hotel has seventy two rooms in all, in a range of hotel rooms, garden and lake view suites, and 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom lake view apartments.

The hotel is spread over two main buildings which span 11 floors in total, and step back up the hillside from the road. From our experience, the rooms in the front building can be a little noisier as they are closer to Lake Esplanade. We usually try for a room in the back building.

Over the years we've organised several stays for groups of friends, and the larger apartments are perfect if you are travelling with a group. But be sure to choose a lake view apartment.

With the resort's permission, we even had a wedding ceremony on the balcony of a lake view apartment a few years back.

Also take care to choose a flexible rate just in case you need to change your booking for any reason. Your travel insurance might also cover changes, but please check the conditions.

Please book your Peppers Beacon Queenstown room well in advance

Because Queenstown is one of our premier holiday destinations, accommodation can book out many months in advance, especially in the busy periods like the ski season (late June to October), summer (December to February), long weekends, and during the New Zealand school holidays.

You can make your Peppers Beacon reservations here.

For stays at other hotels close to the town centre, we recommend booking your central Queenstown accommodation well in advance.
