The best Supermarkets in Queenstown

Here's all the information you need about the best supermarkets in Queenstown.

Fortunately, we are spoilt for choice, and there's a really good variety of supermarkets here in Queenstown.

So there's lots of options for you, but you will probably be swayed by the supermarkets location and proximity to where you are staying.

Your choice of accommodation here is important and if you have the time, have a read of our recommendations here.

So What are the Best supermarkets in Queenstown?

The supermarket names that you will see here (and in many other locations in New Zealand) are Pak'nSave, Woolworths, Fresh Choice, and New World. You will also see smaller independantly owned Four Square supermarkets, and the ever popular small corner stores, known here as a "Dairy". This can be confusing to visitors, because here in New Zealand, a "dairy" is a small convenience store, not a place where cows are milked! So now, if you hear a local say "I'm just heading down to the dairy" you will know what they are talking about. On the Spot at Fernhill is a typical example.

There's a couple of smaller supermarkets near the town centre (Fresh Choice and Four Square), but most of the larger ones are located out towards the airport at either Five Mile (Pak'nSave and Woolworths) or Remarkables Park (New World), and we usually co-ordinate our shopping with our daily adventures, so that we don't have to drive too far.

Five Mile and Remarkables Park are great shopping precincts, and have lots of factory outlet stores, banks, cafes, restaurants, and various other retail outlets, so chances are you can find what you need at one or the other.

In town, Queenstown Mall is legendary, and is always buzzing, with over 100 bars, pubs, restaurants, shops, and tourism businesses, and we can spend hours wandering and exploring. And the views of Lake Wakatipu and the mountains from almost anywhere in town are stunning.

Then, if we need a few essential groceries before heading home, we usually pick them up at the Four Square.

You can see their locations on the Google map at the bottom of the page - click here.

Pak'nSave

302 Hawthorne Drive Frankton, Queenstown

A huge choice in a warehouse like setting, with lots of free parking. They have an excellent bakery section, and we love their pre-made rolls. They also have a good selection of alcohol at reasonable prices.

They also have a catering service, and you can shop online, but will need to collect your groceries from the store.

A neat feature is Shop'nGo, where you can scan your items as you go, keep a track of your spend, then pay at a dedicated check out.

Other facilities are a fuel station, E-car charging, a cafe, and wifi.

Woolworths (previously known as Countdown)

One of New Zealand's original supermarket chains, Woolworths, like New World, are found around the country, and have a full range of products. There's regular specials and their "Woolworths Own" branded range are often a cheaper option.

The Five Mile shopping centre has dozens of retail outlets (including a large Kmart), cafes and restaurants, and a Sudima hotel.

New World

1/12 Hawthorne Drive Remarkables Park, Queenstown

New World is an excellent supermarket with a wide range of products. It's located within the Remarkables Park shopping centre next to the airport, and there's a good range of other retailers here.

They cater for functions, and we've used them for food platters for a party, which were excellent.

You can shop online and collect, or they will deliver. Keep an eye out for their "Super Saver" specials.

New World also offer discounts of up to 6 cents per litre for fuel. The discounts appear on your receipt, and are usually for the "Z", Caltex, and New World branded petrol stations (subject to change).

An added benefit of shopping here are the stunning views of the Remarkables mountains. Wow!
