Welcome to the gorgeous North Island, and what may very well be the perfect New Zealand North Island itinerary.
Full of contrasts, the North Island is a combination of Maori cultural delights, geothermal wonders, beautiful bays and beaches, huge lakes, and many other natural highlights.
Beginning in our largest city, Auckland, your adventure then takes you to the seaside villages and towns of the Coromandel (proudly claimed to be "Good for your soul"), before heading to the geothermal and cultural wonders of Rotorua.
Waitomo, famous for it's caves is next on your journey followed by Taupo, on the shores of our largest lake. From Taupo you head south east to Napier and Hawke's Bay, one of our premier wine growing regions, but also renowned for it's fabulous coastline and wildlife.
Finally you head south to our capital Wellington, a beautiful coastal city with a vibrant foodie vibe, wonderful scenery, and so much more.

Day 1 of your New Zealand North Island itinerary -arrive in Auckland, the Harbour City
Welcome to Auckland. Built around two beautiful harbours, life here is very much focussed on life outdoors.
Where to stay in Auckland
Depending on your flight arrival time it might be more convenient to stay near the airport. Both the Novotel and the Pullman are close by and both are very popular. The airport is around 20 kilometres south of the city centre and the area could be a good choice as you will be heading this way on day 3.
If you would prefer to stay closer to the city centre there's a huge choice of options. The Viaduct area is nice and central with lots of bars and restaurants, and close to everything in the city centre. You can check availability and read reviews here.
Day 2 - explore Auckland
With a day to explore, one of the more popular activities is the half day highlights tour. Lasting around 3.5 hours, this small group tour takes you to some of the scenic highlights of the city and can include hotel pick up and drop off from city centre hotels. You can choose a morning or afternoon tour.
A visit to Skytower, our tallest building at 328 metres is a must. The views are 360 degrees and are spectacular. If you are feeling adventurous they offer a Skywalk around the perimeter of the tower, and a even a Skyjump (a 192 metre plunge)!
Waiheke Island sits off the coast and is home to a range of cafes, wineries, and beautiful walks. The ferry ride over is a highlight and there's a range of tours available.

Day 3 - drive from Auckland to Whitianga and the Coromandel Peninsula

Driving time 2.75 hours
Today your New Zealand North Island itinerary takes you to the stunning Coromandel Peninsula. The local tourism organisation claims that the Coromandel is "Good for your soul", and it's certainly a place that encourages relaxation. Towns like Thames, Whitianga, Pauanui, Coromandel Town, Whangamata and Waihi all have their own special charm, and each is filled with local artisans, pubs, restaurants and businesses featuring local arts and produce.
We've chosen Whitianga, on the eastern side of the peninsula for your stay, as it's close to some of the main attractions like Cathedral Cove, New Chum Beach and Hot Water Beach.

Day 4 of your New Zealand North Island itinerary - explore Coromandel Peninsula
Welcome to the Coromandel Peninsula, an enchanting slice of paradise in New Zealand that's perfect for first-time explorers. With its mix of lush forests, stunning beaches, and charming towns, it promises an unforgettable adventure for every traveler.
Start your journey at Cathedral Cove, a must-see spectacle where the huge natural arch and crystal-clear waters create a picture-perfect setting. Whether you're kayaking, snorkelling, simply soaking up the sun, or enjoying a guided cruise, its breathtaking beauty is sure to captivate you.
Afterward, head to Hot Water Beach for a unique experience—digging your very own hot spring in the sand. Make sure you arrive a couple of hours before or after low tide for the best bubbling results!
For a dash of adventure, don your hiking boots and trek the Pinnacles Walk. This rewarding trail offers panoramic views of the peninsula and beyond, making the effort worthwhile.
If you’re more into relaxing, visit the charming town of Coromandel, overflowing with local art, quirky cafes, and the iconic Driving Creek Railway, which offers a delightful journey through native bush.
End your day with some local seafood. We love Buffalo Beach Takeaways in Albert Street Whitianga. Their snapper is delicious.

Day 5 - drive from Whitianga to Mt Maunganui in the Bay of Plenty

Day 6 - explore Bay of Plenty
Kia ora and welcome to Mount Maunganui, or “The Mount” as the locals call it! Ready for some Kiwi magic? This stunning coastal spot has something for everyone. Sun worshippers can relax on the main beach's golden sands, perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply soaking up the rays. Feeling adventurous? Hike or walk up Mauao (Mount Maunganui itself) for breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding area. It's a bit of a climb, but so worth it!
Foodies, get ready! The Mount is bursting with cafes and restaurants. Grab a coffee with ocean views or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants along the bustling main strip. Fancy some retail therapy? Explore the boutique shops and art galleries dotted around the area.
For a more chilled-out vibe, head to Pilot Bay, perfect for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. In the evening, catch a vibrant sunset and then enjoy the lively atmosphere of the bars and pubs. So, what are you waiting for? Come and experience the Mount’s laid-back charm and natural beauty!

Day 7 - drive from Mt Maunganui to Rotorua

Day 8 - explore Rotorua
Welcome to Rotorua! Get ready to experience the geothermal wonderland of New Zealand. This vibrant region offers a unique blend of adventure, culture, and relaxation, perfect for first-time visitors.
For breathtaking views, hop on the Skyline Gondola. Glide above the city, soaking in panoramic vistas of Lake Rotorua and the surrounding geothermal landscapes. At the top, try the thrilling luge, or just relax and enjoy the scenery. It's a great way to get your bearings and appreciate the region's beauty.
Immerse yourself in Māori culture with a guided tour of Te Puia. Witness the power of nature at Pohutu Geyser, marvel at the intricate carvings in the traditional meeting house, and be captivated by a cultural performance showcasing Māori song and dance. It's a truly enriching experience.
Adventure awaits around every corner in Rotorua. Raft down the Kaituna River, home to the world's highest commercially rafted waterfall, for an adrenaline rush. Or, explore the magnificent Redwood forest with a tranquil treetop walk or by mountain bike, choosing from a network of trails catering to all skill levels.
After a day of exploring, unwind with a soak in a geothermal spa. The Polynesian Spa, overlooking Lake Rotorua, offers a range of pools with varying temperatures and mineral compositions. It's the perfect way to relax and rejuvenate.
And don't forget to tantalize your taste buds with a traditional Māori hangi, cooked underground using geothermal heat. This unique culinary experience is a must-try.

Day 9 - drive from Rotorua to Waitomo

Another short driving day today as you head west to Waitomo, home to one of our most popular attractions, Waitomo Caves.
Accommodation here is a little limited so we recommend booking well ahead of your stay. You can see options here.
No New Zealand North Island itinerary would be complete without a visit to the famous Waitomo Caves. These are a major drawcard, with most people coming to see the enchanting glowworms. But the caves also house some stunning formations, and walking tours of the subterranean caverns are fascinating.
For those feeling a little more adventurous, blackwater rafting takes you into the waterway well below land.
Day 10 - drive from Waitomo to Taupo
Distance 150 klm (93 miles)
Driving time 2 hours
Today it's a leisurely two hour drive through rolling farmland to Taupo.

There's a good variety of accommodation in Taupo. We love staying along the lakefront and the Baycrest Thermal Lodge is a favourite. Some rooms have thermal tubs and there's also a beautiful heated outdoor pool.

Welcome to Taupo. This breathtaking town sits on the shores of magnificent Lake Taupo, the largest freshwater lake in Australasia. Offering endless opportunities for water lovers, there's a range of adventures waiting for you.
Imagine gliding across its serene waters on a kayak, or enjoying the thrill of a fast-paced jet boat ride. Don’t miss the chance to cast a line and indulge in some of the best trout fishing in the world. Or head out on the lake to view Maori rock carvings. We loved this. And we never miss the chance to visit the thundering Huka Falls to witness nature's power as over
220,000 liters of water plunge over the falls every second – we can't believe the volume of water that surges through here. It's a must do free attraction, is wheelchair accessible, and from the car park to the viewing platform it's less than a 200 metre walk.
Beyond the lake's inviting waters, Taupo's geothermal charms are unmissable. A short drive away, the Craters of the Moon park invites you to wander among steaming vents and bubbling craters.
Taupo is also a haven for adrenaline junkies. The Tandem Skydiving opportunity over Lake Taupo allows you to drink in dizzying views from above, a breathtaking experience that's the highlight of many visitors' trips. If heights aren’t your cup of tea, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing offers an unforgettable trek across volcanic landscapes, showcasing stunning vistas at every turn. We always recommend a guided hike and there are several available like this one.

Day 11 - drive from Taupo to Napier and Hawke's Bay

Driving time 2 hours
Today you head back to the east coast and the town of Napier in beautiful Hawke's Bay.

Napier is a beautiful town sitting on a pristine coastline. The views are stunning and there's some really nice places to stay that are close to the town centre, with those always important coastal views. The Shoreline Motel is a great choice.

Nestled on the sun-kissed east coast of New Zealand’s North Island, Napier and the wider Hawke’s Bay region promise an unforgettable travel experience, blending striking Art Deco charm and rich viticulture with captivating landscapes and heartwarming kiwi hospitality.

But the allure of Napier extends beyond its architectural beauty. The region is famously dubbed New Zealand's Food and Wine Country, and for good reason! Complementing this array of experiences are vibrant farmers' markets, art galleries, and friendly locals eager to share their stories and cultural richness.
We also love to visit the National Aquarium of New Zealand followed by a relaxing soak at the Ocean Spa. You can't beat soaking in a hot pool with ocean views. Heaven!
Golf tragics will love the challenge of Cape Kidnappers. The area is also famous for it's Gannet colony and there are some excellent organised tours available like this one.

Day 12 - drive from Napier to Wellington
Distance 325 klm (202 miles)
Driving time 4.5 hours
Today takes you south east to our beautiful capital, Wellington.
Wellington accommodation
Depending on our plans, we usually choose a hotel near the Wellington city centre, or near Wellington Airport.
The Copthorne at Oriental Bay has wonderful views (be sure to choose an ocean view room) and is opposite the harbour. There's a range of restaurants close by, and it's a short walk to the centre of the city.
Near the airport there's a range of hotels and Rydges is right next to the terminal.

Day 13 - explore Wellington
Wellington has a renowned cafe culture, and we love exploring the streets and lanes in the city centre, as there's always somewhere new to try.
There's a couple of iconic attractions in wellington that we can highly recommend:
* the Wellington Cable Car
* the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
* Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary
* Weta Workshop, whose contribution to classics like Lord of the Rings, Avatar and The Hobbit are legendary. Come and see how it was all done.
Day 14 - depart Wellington
